MINOT AIR FORCE BASE, N.D. -- Crunch, crunch, crunch.
It's a sound Senior Airman Derreck Bachner knows well. His boots make it with each step he takes on hard-packed snow. And he hears it a lot each winter while on perimeter patrol of the weapons storage area at Minot Air Force Base, N.D.
The sound also proves the 21st century Air Force still does some things the old-fashioned way. No high-tech sensors or gadgets here. Just a vigilant, rosy-checked airman with an M-16 slung over his shoulder doing his job on some of the coldest real estate the Air Force owns.
