Jul. 22--In September 1965, Cesar Chavez began leading a five-year strike by California grape pickers and a nationwide boycott of California grapes.
The collective and organized ostracism was the nation's most successful, said Kevin McGee, economics professor at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
"A lot of people adhered to the boycott and it had a real dramatic impact on the grape industry in California," he said. "They eventually met the demands of the striking workers the boycott was designed to support.
