More than four years ago, Colombian peasants surrounded by armed conflict took a bold, risky step - making a commitment to shun all weapons and alliances with any armed faction. The residents designated San Jose de Apartado a "peace community."

"This community is a form of nonviolent resistance," explains Cecilia Zarate-Laun, a Colombian native who lives in Madison.

These peasants have held fast to their principles in the face of ongoing intimidation and brutality from leftist rebels and right-wing paramilitaries and lack of protection from Colombia's armed forces.
