KANSAS CITY, Mo. _ Donna Malter's 40 roommates are the stuff of fairy tales, S-shaped and covered with spines, graceful, fluorescent-colored jewels.
Hippocampus.
Seahorses.
This is remarkable considering seahorses are nearly impossible to keep alive in captivity, let alone breed.
Yet she does and, according to other seahorse hobbyists, she is one of only a handful of people in this country who can.
Before the seahorses, Malter, now 36, was a burned-out lawyer with three cats, a collection of fancy hats and a dimly lighted apartment.
Two years ago, she went to the Chicago aquarium where seahorses mesmerized her.
