WASHINGTON -- Many family practice residency programs are struggling with the aftermath of yet another decline in the specialty's Match Day results.

Family practice fill rates in 2001 hit their lowest mark in 8 years. The steep 1-year drop of nearly 5% nationwide reinforces a downward trend that began in 1997. And the percentage of FP residency slots filled by U.S. medical school graduates has fallen to a new low of less than 50%.

In response, residency program directors and other family practice leaders are searching harder than ever for ways to reverse the recruitment decline.
