SARASOTA, FLA. -- Estrogen therapy in older women with osteoporosis can reduce the vertebral fracture rate by 80% and the nonvertebral fracture rate by about 25%, Dr. John W Pendleton said at a conference on geriatric issues in primary care sponsored by Temple University.
It takes about 7 years of treatment for effects to be seen, but estrogen can increase bone mineral density even in women who don't begin hormone replacement therapy until age 75, said Dr. Pendleton of the University of Virginia, Roanoke-Salem Program, and chief of rheumatology at Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Salem.
