Asbestos Raises Coverage Questions
Asbestos--the miracle fiber of the 1940s and 1950s--has become the scourge of the 1980s.
As evidence of the negative health effects of exposure to the airborne fiber mounted, American businesses have been forced to face up to the consequences associated with "the asbestos problem."
First, in the early 1970s, came a ban on almost all commercial uses of asbestos.
This was followed, in the early and mid-1980s, by a growing clamor for identification of existing asbestos-containing materials and eventual removal or abatement (by enclosing it or sealing it off) of asbestos in schools, hospitals, factories, ...
