WAR, EVEN FOR the most noble purpose, is ugly, savage and wasteful. But in the course of this country's history, it's been a necessary evil.
The freedoms, liberty, security and prosperity enjoyed by Americans came at a price: the blood of its citizens in battles spanning the American Revolution to the Persian Gulf. Yet, to many people, war is an abstract concept of old generals leading faceless hordes into combat.
