More than 45 million Americans suffer from male or female pattern baldness. Here are some facts on hair loss:

Q. What causes hair loss?

A. The most common form of hair loss _ androgenetic alopecia or pattern baldness _ is largely hereditary and is caused by presence of a male hormone called dehydrotestosterone (DHT).

Men with genetic sensitivity to normal levels of DHT will develop male pattern baldness and can begin losing hair in their 20s. Doctors think female pattern is caused by similar factors. But most women start losing hair later in life. The loss speeds up after menopause and loss of estrogen.
