Midwestern and Northeastern senators are in a tug-of-war over whether to allow the Northeast dairy compact, which protects Northeastern dairy farmers, to continue.
Ever since Sen. Jim Jeffords decided that he could better represent Vermont and placate his New England conscience as an independent, the fate of the Northeast dairy compact has been as uncertain as Jeffords' political moorings. To conservatives, libertarians and Midwesterners on Capitol Hill, who long have argued that the compact is nothing more than a price-fixing cartel, the expiration date on the "milk tax" is past due.
