Americans have a rare opportunity to see great German art from the last century in a brilliant exhibition at the National Gallery, a collection on loan from Berlin's Nationalgalerie.
Americans aren't familiar with 19th-century German art, and that's not surprising. There's not much of it here for us to see. The rich who bought art a century ago generally purchased works by old masters such as Raphael and Titian. When they wanted contemporary works they most often turned to Paris -- then the world's center of serious art -- as did most everyone.
