Of the two panel discussions hosted by the Pattern and Foundry Tooling Div., one concentrated on the merits of using rapid prototyping.
In that discussion, three panelists all agreed that the initial benefit that rapid prototyping offers is speed. "If the customer is not integrated in time compression, he won't be looking at the rapid prototyping method," said L. Andre, Solidiform, Inc. If end-deliverability is the concern then rapid prototyping is a better, faster, cheaper way to make castings, but it doesn't mean it costs less money to do, he added. Under those circumstances, however, most customers are happy to pay the premium.
