Meeting at the end of the most violent century ever in human history and at the threshold of the third millennium, the eighth assembly of the World Council of Churches declared 2001-2010 as the Decade to Overcome Violence. In response to this call, the central committee, at its last meeting in August 1999, sent a letter to the churches reminding them of the decision of the assembly and inviting them actively and responsibly to participate in the Decade. Together with the letter, a more detailed text in the form of a "Message" from the central committee was sent to the churches.
