2001 JUL 13 - (NewsRx Network) -- by Sonia Nichols, senior medical writer - Levels of growth factors that influence tumor growth are three times higher in the cancers of young patients with Wilms tumor than in healthy controls, according to a new study.
Wilms tumor is a form of kidney cancer that primarily affects pediatric patients. Researchers in Sweden at the University of Uppsala say these tumors produce elevated levels of common angiogenic growth factors, which suggests using quantifiable measures of angiogenesis may be valuable for predicting progression and survival in young patients with that type of cancer.
