Age-adjusted death rates for heart disease and cancer, the two leading causes of death in the US, continued to

fall in 1999, according to preliminary data released in late June by the Department of Health and Human Services Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Heart disease and cancer account for more than half of all deaths in the US year.

In addition, the CDC noted that deaths by suicide, homicide and firearm mortality dropped an estimated 6% between 1998 and 1999.
