Aug. 3--RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK -- JDS Uniphase laid off about 30 Triangle employees Thursday and halted an expansion of Cronos Integrated Microsystems, the next-generation chip manufacturing company it acquired from nonprofit research center MCNC last year.
Cronos, now a subsidiary of JDS Uniphase, has put on hold plans to produce its micro-electro-mechanical systems, or MEMS, chips in the old Motorola plant on Cornwallis Road in Research Triangle Park, which JDS Uniphase bought in June 2000.
