In the disc's main attraction, Lorin Maazel leads the VPO in a languorous performance of Stravinsky's original 1911 version of Petrouchka. In 1947 the composer rescored the piece for a smaller ensemble to clarify the texture, but here we have the full orchestral rendition. Maazel takes the ballet at a quieter, more dreamy pace than many interpreters, yet it still conveys most of the work's colorful interludes with sparkle and charm.
