Nicholas Payton: Payton's Place (Verve 314 557 227-2)
In Issue 731 reviewed three recordings by trumpeter Dave Douglas, two of which I had to discipline myself to listen to over and over in an attempt to let them grow on me -- which they never did. At about the same time that I purchased those CDs, I also picked up the latest by trumpeter Nicholas Payton, and believe me, I did not have to force myself to listen to Payton's Place over and over again, because it was always a pleasure to hear.
