Shostakovich: Waltzes. Constantine Orbelian, Moscow Chamber Orchestra. Delos DE 3257.
When you think of music by Shostakovich, the waltz probably isn't the first thing that springs to mind. But he obviously wrote quite a few waltzes; not waltzes for dancing per se as the Strauss family did, but waltzes as incidental music in film scores, operas, and ballet suites. This new Delos release collects over 20 of them (well, two galops and a polka are included for good measure) to enjoy.
