The Great Waltz Composers. Anton Paulik, Vienna State Opera Orchestra. Vanguard Classics SVC-143.
The only disadvantage of this collection is that contains but six waltzes, about 50 minutes worth of music. Recorded in 1965, it is a Super Bit Map remaster of a Vanguard vinyl LP, with no added material. It's over much too fast and leaves one wanting more.
The idea behind the program is unique: it presents a chronological progression of composers from Josef Lanner, the early 19th-century "Father of the Waltz," to Oskar Nedbal, a 20th-century Czech proponent of the form.
