Just over 900 years ago, late in the year 1100, the First Crusade came to an end with the establishment of the Kingdom of Jerusalem and the coronation of Baldwin I of Boulogne as its monarch.
Jerusalem had been conquered after Crusaders from Europe _ mostly from France _ heeded the call of Pope Urban II in 1095 to reclaim from Islam (the Seljuq Turks) the path of Christian pilgrimage through Asia Minor (today's Turkey) and to secure the Holy City from control of what Christianity then designated the infidel.
