MIAMI _ High school football coaches and athletic trainers in Miami-Dade and Broward counties took precautions on Monday to make sure their players drank plenty of liquids and received ample breaks in the sweltering heat as more than 90 teams and 6,000 athletes took to the field for the first day of fall football practices allowed by the Florida High School Activities Association.
The attention to such details in near 90-degree heat comes on the heels of four football deaths during conditioning drills in the past 13 days, two of them directly attributed to heatstroke.
