NEW YORK -- While few people openly discuss it, the problem of pediculosis (head lice) affects between 12 million and 25 million individuals annually in the United States alone, with most of those infected children under the age of 12.
Head lice are tiny, wingless bugs about the size of a sesame seed. They have six legs and live only on human scalps. Head lice can range in color from light brown to gray. While annoying, they are not life threatening.
While the numbers obviously indicate a serious problem in the U.S., the statistic pales in comparison with the lice out-breaks occurring in many other nations, particularly those with warmer climates. In ...
