OAKLAND, Calif. _ Bret Saberhagen played catch with pitching coach Joe Kerrigan for about five minutes early Wednesday afternoon.
When Saberhagen was done, his surgically repaired right shoulder was tight, his face was etched with disappointment and he made his postseason retirement official.
Of course, whether Saberhagen will be able to pitch any more this season is problematic.
The two-time Cy Young Award winner was forced out of Boston's 5-2 loss to Oakland Tuesday night after only four innings because his shoulder tightened up. It was his third start since returning to the active roster after missing more than a season and a half while ...
