The lead story on the front page of The Virginian-Pilot for July 24 headed ``The Crumbling State Capitol,'' which began with a brief mention of the tragedy that took place in the same building in 1870 and resulted in the death of 62 persons and serious injuries to 251 others, whetted the interest of many readers who were unaware that an accident of that magnitude had ever happened in the Old Dominion.
Since there were no further references to the catastrophe in subsequent editions of The Pilot, I decided to do a bit of research on the subject to fill in my own ignorance of what took place. My principal source of information was ...
