The Nordstrom of Iowa. Go ahead and snicker, Minnesotans, but that's the shorthand that Von Maur shoppers often use to identify its place in the department store pantheon.
When the new store opened last week in Eden Prairie Center, many first-time Von Maur shoppers were comparing the 129-year-old family-owned department store to Nordstrom rather than to Dayton's, er, Marshall Field's. Kevin Balon of Eden Prairie, who was shopping for a sport coat, described Von Maur as "beautiful. A little more upscale than Dayton's and not so packed with merchandise. You can actually see things."
