SANTA ANA, Calif. _ All Santa Ana ninth graders will take an extra class this school year in an ambitious plan to set higher standards and send more students to college from one of the state's lowest-ranked districts.
Ninth graders at the four main high schools will start their days at 7:15 a.m., an hour earlier than the rest, when they go back to school on Sept. 4. Struggling students will take a math, reading or English class, while the rest will take a course that counts toward graduation.
