Aug. 9--The time has come to renew the federal right-of-way permit for the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System. Authorized by a 30-year federal grant that expires on Jan. 22, 2004, the pipeline can only remain in place and in operation if a new right-of-way authorization is issued.
The Alaska State Office of the Bureau of Land Management has determined that the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System (TAPS) owners' application for a renewal of the right-of-way is a major federal action that requires an environmental impact statement.
