This work addresses the textual problem raised by the early history of Dom Juan. The play was performed just once in its original form and was not published in Moliere's lifetime. Because of the enthusiasm of the censors, none of the seventeenth-century French editions is reliable. Thomas Corneille's bland verse rendering suppresses the problematic atheism and even La Grange's 1682 edition was heavily censored.
