MANY of those who knew Larry Adler, the world's greatest harmonica player who died of pneumonia on Monday at the age of 87, thought he was a faintly irritating, thin American with a crumpled face, a sanctimonious style and a gift for self-publicity.

But he would always be forgiven when he stood up with his mouth organ and produced sounds no one else could dream of making from this humble instrument.

The legendary virtuoso wrote the music for the film Genevieve and was nominated for an Oscar - although in McCarthyite America he was not even mentioned in the film credits because he was suspected of communist sympathies.
