BOOMING compact disc sales have sounded the death knell for the audio cassette.

Figures released yesterday show the market for music recorded on tapes has collapsed, with sales falling by 70 per cent in the last year.

At the same time there have been significant increases in the number of CDs being sold.

Industry experts believe the switch between formats is being encouraged in part by car manufacturers whose new models are equipped with CD players.

The dramatic dive in the popularity of cassette tapes is revealed in a review of the music industry between April and June conducted by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI).
