Aug. 11--KIRLINS PUT THEIR HALLMARK ON CHAIN: It's not easy being a Hallmark store owner these days. More and more people are sending electronic greeting cards rather than Hallmark's snail mail, and there's increasing competition from mass merchants such as Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Walgreen Co., which now carry a lower-price line of Hallmark cards.
Those challenges haven't stopped Kirlin's Hallmark from thriving. In fact, the Quincy, Ill., merchant has just been named the 2001 Illinois Retailer of the Year by the Illinois Retail Merchants Association.
