Byline: Pat Lackey
Once upon a time the boss at Amtrak, a quasi-private rail company, tired of the usual bad news about late trains and low ridership. For relief, he called in an underling to report on Amtrak's super speedy Acela Express, a passenger train running from Washington, D.C., to Boston and back.
Boss: Freshen my memory here, Joe. How fast does that sucker go?
Underling: It blazes down the track, sir, at 150 miles an hour. She is sleek.
Boss: How far does it go?
Underling: About 450 miles.
Boss: So it takes, what, a little over three hours?
