Lawrence O'Bryan Branch is little remembered today, but in his short life he compiled a remarkable record as a politician and a soldier.
Branch was born Nov. 28, 1820, in Enfield, Halifax County, into a North Carolina family distinguished by its military and political history.
His grandfather, John Branch, served as an officer under Gen. Nathanael Greene during the American Revolution and was a delegate to the state's constitutional convention.
