The future of the mining and minerals industries is inseparable from the global pursuit of sustainable development -- defined as meeting the needs of this generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. There is much public antagonism towards mining, and three years ago chief executives of leading mining companies recognised the need for constructive engagement with the industry's critics. Hence the Global Mining Initiative was spawned (MJ, October 27, 2000, p. 334). The GMI is essentially an agent for change and will disappear once the structures and relationships it is developing are in place (Mpr, April 13, p.267).
