IN CRITICAL THEORY AND SCIENCE FICTION, Carl Freedman argues that critical theory and SF are each "a version of the other" (xv), with science fiction "a privileged generic object for critical theory" (86) and critical theory likely to be illuminated by science fiction (xix, 23). Freedman counts Mikhail Bakhtin, Georg Lukacs, Ernst Bloch, and Karl Marx "as (if implicitly and unconsciously) [...] major theorists of science fiction" (86).
