BEVERLY ENTERPRISES Inc.'s record of avoiding trial over claims of negligence in its Arkansas nursing homes came to an end last week.
A Cleburne County jury began hearing a case that accuses the Fort Smith nursing home chain of neglecting a 73-year-old patient in July 1998 in its Geriatric Care Center in Heber Springs.
The nursing homes industry has been hit hard by Arkansas juries in recent months. In June, two Arkansas juries awarded a total of $90.7 million to families who said their loved ones weren't properly cared for in nursing homes operated by other companies.
