SAN JOSE, Calif. _ A year ago Washington Elementary School and the surrounding rows of single-story, stucco homes were a point of pride for residents, a living model of what neighborhoods can accomplish when reclaiming streets from gangs.
But the war is not over, say police and residents. A recent rise in gang-related murders and assaults across San Jose this year, including a fatal shooting in the city's Washington neighborhood, has people facing old fears again.
