Urinalysis Often Adequate for UTI With Fever.

The odds of missing a urinary tract infection in a febrile child are greater when no urinalysis is performed than when a urinalysis yields a false negative result, said Dr. Richard Bachur and Dr. Marvin B. Harper of Children's Hospital, Boston.

Very young infants usually require a urine culture regardless of the urinalysis result, but given the invasiveness of a urine culture, knowing which older infants can be sufficiently tested for a urinary tract infection (UTI) with a screening urinalysis is more efficient for the pediatrician and less stressful for the child, they said.
