In more than 15 years studying superintendent turnover, I figured I had encountered all the usual suspects that account for the rapid departures in the district leadership ranks.
Except one: the superintendent's secretary.
A couple of years ago I stumbled onto a rather bizarre scenario in one small Midwestern school district that had suffered from the rapid turnover of five superintendents in less than eight years. A long-entrenched secretary was fingered quietly by superintendents in neighboring communities as the culprit. As a researcher, I had to confirm this myself.
