Horses in a circus? That's a concept older than the big top itself.
But where Gilles Ste-Croix worked, horses were heresy. That's the way it is at Cirque du Soleil, where the creators would rather have tarp-eating moths than any animal beneath their big top. So Ste-Croix, a country-bred circus veteran who grew up with horses, was shot down every time he raised the specter of adding anything equine to the show.
