Article: Alcatel Disposes of Modems Arm.(Thomson Multimedia S.A. acquisition)(Brief Article)

As reported in the June 8, 2001 issue of The Financial Times, French telecom equipment maker, Alcatel, has agreed to sell its high-speed Internet modems business to Thomson Multimedia (TMM) as part of its strategy to focus on communication networks. Alcatel and the French consumer electronics company said Alcatel would sell its modem digital subscriber line (DSL) business for 9.5 million, new TMM shares, valuing the deal at 456 million Euros (US$389 million).

Shares in the two groups fell, despite analysts rating for the sale as positive for both, amid a general malaise in tech stocks and negative sentiment towards Alcatel.
