The moribund Alliance can either merge with the Tories or be reborn as a western party
If a week is a long time in politics, then three weeks is simply an eon in the Canadian Alliance. Will Stockwell Day be the leader of the Alliance when this story hits the newsstands? If so, he will not remain leader for long, perhaps no longer than July 17's caucus meeting. Will the Alliance survive Mr. Day? Probably not, but its death could, given the right leadership, lead to a rebirth of the Reform Party as a western political vehicle.
Mr. Day sealed his fate Sunday, July 8, when he withdrew his offer to take an immediate leave of absence and then resign in April ...
