BETHESDA, MD. -- The conclusions from an interim analysis of data on doxazosin from the Antihypertensive and Lipid-Lowering Treatment to Prevent Heart Attack Trial should be communicated to physicians, according to the Food and Drug Administration's Cardiovascular and Renal Drugs Advisory Committee.
The ALLHAT arm that compared the [alpha]-blocker doxazosin with the thiazide diuretic chlorthalidone showed a higher risk of congestive heart failure (CHF) and stroke in hypertensive patients treated with doxazosin, compared with those treated with chlorthalidone. The interim results led investigators to halt last year the study arm comparing these two drugs.
