DURBAN, SOUTH AFRICA -- C-reactive protein measurement is useful for early identification of the subset of patients who develop bacterial superinfection following an upper respiratory infection of viral origin, Dr. Manfred Maier reported at WONCA 2001, the conference of the World Organization of Family Doctors.
C-reactive protein (CRP) measurement thus offers a means of curbing widespread antibiotic overprescribing for upper respiratory tract disease by zeroing in on a patient subset in whom antimicrobials are rational and appropriate.
