Aug. 22--Gov. Rick Perry signed a better jobs act on Tuesday and used the Alamo City -- with its legacy of cheap labor -- as a backdrop for the ceremony.
The Better Jobs Act, otherwise known as Senate Bill 607, lets municipalities increase their sales tax to pay for education and job-training programs. The program is intended to help low-wage earners become qualified to land higher-paying jobs.
The act also is designed to provide additional education programs for youngsters while their parents get job training.
