There's something about the mingled smell of pronto pups, animal barns and overflowing trash bins that makes one mindful of Minnesota political history.
OK, maybe the State Fair does not have that effect on everyone. But after a couple of decades of mining the Great Minnesota Get-Together for stories about politics, this correspondent's mind's eye can still see a beaming Hubert Humphrey, an uncomfortable Eugene McCarthy and a root-beer-milk-peddling Rudy Boschwitz on Carnes and Judson Avenues.
Ignatius Donnelly was probably there once, too. After all, the fair predates statehood by ...
