"RIDE THE RIDEAU," someone joked, and jostled my elbow. I tried to shift away but there were too many people around me.

Usually I avoided crowds, and while this technically didn't qualify for what I consider a crowd -- it was just about a dozen people -- we were crammed together by the canal. A bunch of us had come up from New York to Ottawa for the week for a computing services convention, and this being the first night of the con and thus slow, we'd gone out to sightsee; after today, we wouldn't have time for anything but countless dry computing seminars, practically from dawn to dusk.
