DALLAS _ At SMU, starting quarterback and backup are all but synonymous. The roles can be reversed in less time than it takes to draw up a two-deep roster.
There's been so much turnover, it almost takes a weekly planner, a few sharpened pencils and some erasers to keep up with the quarterback situation.
Five quarterbacks have played in the past four seasons under coach Mike Cavan. And that's not because they were seniors who graduated.
A lack of consistent production at the most important and pressure-packed position in football, and Cavan's willingness to yank his starter, means the No. 1 role is a tenuous and temporary description.
