NEW YORK -- For the thousands of individuals across North America suffering from diabetes, blood glucose monitoring is an important part of their daily routine.
According to ACNielsen, sales of blood glucose test strips and monitors grew 17.5% during the 52 weeks ended June 16. In drug stores, which control more than three-quarters of the market, volume increased 24.3%.
For chain drug retailers that has meant a lucrative category that provides high margins and good turns.
And for consumers the growing competition in the segment has led to low-price, high-tech devices that make drawing a blood sample easier and less painful than ever.
